What is required to study Chemistry at Oxford and Cambridge

Chemistry is a highly popular and versatile subject that leads to many career avenues in a number of science and technology sectors.

Whilst Oxford offers chemistry as a standalone subject, Cambridge does not and all natural science undergraduates start with a Natural Sciences degree (Physical or Biological). Chemistry will be one of the four subjects that the student can pick to study in their first year. In the second year, students who would like to pursue chemistry will typically select chemistry A (theoretical/ physical), chemistry B (organic/inorganic), and a third subject that supports their unique interest.

Students who are considering chemistry for their university degrees will need to have the following skills and strengths:

· A strong understanding of fundamental chemistry concepts across different branches of chemistry, e.g., organic, inorganic, physical, theoretical, analytical.

· Problem-solving skills that involve application of fundamental chemistry theories to solve complex chemistry problems

· Familiarity with current research by staying up-to-date on current research in the field of chemistry is important for demonstrating a genuine interest in and knowledge of the subject.

· Communication skills that are reflected by the ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex chemistry concepts.

· Demonstration of practical experience and proficiency in the laboratory experiments

· Appreciation and understanding of real-world applications of chemistry that solve environmental and humanitarian problems.
