What exactly is pooling?

Pooling in the Oxbridge sense is a system whereby good candidates are being re-allocated for consideration to a different college from the one the candidate applied to because the original college was not able to accept the candidate.

In Cambridge, one in four applicants is pooled and of them one in five is offered a place in a different college. Pooling interviews take place in early January following the UCAS application deadline over a few days, and applicants will normally hear of their outcome from mid-January onwards.

In Oxford, the pooling process happens within a much shorter time frame as applicants are often given a second chance within a few days after the first interview while the applicants are still on-site for their interviews.

To preparing for pooling interview, treat it as your first interview and it would also be wise to research a bit about the interviewers and college which is interviewing you.
