Do students from independent schools stand better chances of getting into Oxford and Cambridge?

Both Oxford and Cambridge have made significant efforts in recent years to increase the socio-economic diversity of their student bodies and to widen participation. They have a number of outreach and access programs in place to support students from underrepresented backgrounds and to help them succeed in the admissions process.

The proportion of students admitted from state schools increased from 58.2% 6o 68.2% in 2017-2021 for Oxford. For Cambridge, the proportion of state to independent school students admitted was 71.6% for 2021.

That being said, it is worth noting that private schools in the UK generally have more resources and may provide a more conducive environment for academic success, which could potentially increase the chances of their students being accepted to highly selective universities like Oxford and Cambridge.

Nonetheless. admission to the two universities is based on merit and the individual student's ability to meet the admissions criteria. Factors such as academic achievement, personal statements, extracurricular activities, and test scores are all considered in the admissions process.
